The Rotary Club of Marietta joined in the mid-September Marietta Reads! kick-off for the 2019-20 school year. This Marietta City Schools citywide effort is celebrating its 17th anniversary - fostering reading and literacy in the community. The kick-off celebration offered a variety of literacy activities including school performances, free books, literacy based activities, balloon artists, face painting, a mascot dance-off, and guest appearances. The Rotary Club supports the program all year round. Rotarian Don Barbour is coordinating with all the elementary schools in Cobb County where Marietta Rotarians will begin reading this fall to approximately 800-second graders.

Marietta Reads! encourages each school to set a reading goal for students in the school. Each principal agrees to a Principal's Challenge if students reach the goal. The program is supported by a variety of citizens in a variety of ways. Students share book reviews, recommend books to each other, and encourage the reading of classmates and friends. Parents read at home to provide good models for children. Parents also read to and with their children, take them to the public library, and cheer them on as they work toward reading goals. Faculty and staff members promote reading and encourage students to reach the school goal for the year, assist students in selecting appropriate books, and teach the skills and strategies needed for reading. Volunteers come to schools to read to and with children. Businesses promote Marietta Reads! in the workplace. Individuals and organizations support the costs of providing books for students and rewarding reading achievement.
