Lake Spivey Clayton County Share Spirit of Giving with Local Kids

Members of the Rotary Club of Lake Spivey/Clayton County gathered to celebrate the beginning of the Holiday Season at a reception hosted by fellow members Claudia and Tom Mertl.

The reception followed the completion of one of the club's most respected projects called "The Giving Side of Christmas" at the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. In tits 11th year, The Giving Side of Christmas provided about 100 foster children with an opportunity to shop for presents to give to family or friends. Rotarian Tom Mertl developed this idea during the 20 years he served as chair of the DFACS Board. During that time Tom noticed that the foster children were receiving gifts at Christmas but "did not have the opportunity of experiencing the joy of giving." Accordingly, with simulated money and merchandise provided by the club, these children may now experience the giving side of Christmas by shopping from a broad range of potential gifts displayed on tables in the community center at the church. The gifts "purchased" by each child are then wrapped to be taken home and given at Christmas.
