Visually impaired individuals can enjoy the fun of bicycling along the Silver Comet Trail on tandem bikes! The Pilot is a seeing person who drives from the front seat of a tandem bike and the Stoker is the individual on the back of the tandem bicycle who provides the pedal power. With this combination, visually impaired individuals can learn to bicycle or improve their physical fitness with longer and sometimes faster rides!
Vinings Cumberland Rotarian Kent Osborn is an avid cyclist who saw the opportunity to connect seeing cyclists with the athletes affiliated with the Georgia Blind Sports Association. Kent got tandem bicycles donated, repaired and maintained them, and had them ready to go for Pilots and Stokers! Fellow Rotarians have assisted this initiative with helping to transport the athletes to the Floyd Road entry point of the Silver Comet Trail on weekends. It's great to hear the athletes talk about doing more miles the next ride, feeling some spray from some of the waterfalls along the trail, and hearing about how they zoom past the single cyclists along the way.
