Rick Otness, This Year's William M. Mulkey Greater Giving Award Recipient

In 2015, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody established the William M. Mulkey Greater Giving Award, an annual award to honor a Dunwoody Rotarian for exemplary work on behalf of The Rotary Foundation, the Club and its Charitable Fund. This year, we honor Rick Otness for all he has done to support all our initiatives. Join us in congratulating Rick - pictured here with wife Maureen at one of the many club fundraisers he helped support - from RunDunwoody and the Governor's Ball to the barbecue and a Polio Plus fundraiser. And for all he has done to keep us well organized and ready to do good in the community;

GRSP Leadership Weekend
Help Us Welcome the World to Dunwoody - February 9-11,2024

For 20+ years, the Georgia Rotary Student Program's Leadership weekend has been a signature event - welcoming more than 40 international students to Dunwoody and providing an opportunity for everyone in our Family of Rotary to enjoy fellowship with those students and each other. Our weekend is focused on leadership skills and instilling Rotary's spirit of Service Above Self in these future leaders.

This year, students will be with us in Dunwoody from Friday afternoon, February 9, through Sunday morning, February 11. Co-chairs Jackie Cuthbert and Meredith Morris need your help = as host families, and to help with set-up, food and logistics throughout the weekend.

Students are generally assigned to weekend host parents in pairs - the host provides beds to sleep in on Friday and Saturday. breakfast early Saturday and Sunday mornings, and transportation to and from the Dunwoody Annex on Shallowford. Hosts are invited to join the students for group dinners on Saturday in Rotarian homes and drop in on other parts of the program as they'd like.

To volunteering for the weekend, please contact Jackie Cuthbert at 770-597-1183 or via email at cuthbert@mindspring.com. We'll have a meeting in early January to finalize our weekend plans.

Thank You!
Your Generosity Will Make a Difference

Thanks to all of us, the Marines will make many children happy in this year's Toys for Tots giveaway. After the holiday luncheon, we filled a truck with six bikes - and bags and bags of toys. A special thanks to Jim and Janet Glass for their continued leadership on this project.

And to share a little recap from President Jack's holiday letter, we're celebrating that we continue to Create Hope in the World via our collective good deeds:

  • Providing more than 100 backpacks for children in Tapestri's programs
  • Delivering equipment to people with disabilities through FODAC
  • Welcoming US soldiers back home at the Hartsfield Jackson USO
  • Sponsoring a new GRSP student - Ahmed - and supporting Rotary Youth Exchange, Dunwoody High School Interact and Scholarship programs, Character Counts, the Laws of Life, and books for Dresden and Kingsley Elementary, as well as Thanksgiving baskes at Kingsley
  • Cleaning up the Dunwoody Nature Center and Bounds Gardens
  • Helping the victims of the Maui fire
  • Starting a much-needed affordable Respite Care Facility here in Dunwoody
  • Bringing water to schools in Nepal that have none

For 40 years, our club has done a lot and it all starts with one person who sees a need and begins to take action. Thank you for being Rotary people of action!

Laws of LIfe
It's Almost Time to Judge Essays!

As we head into 2024, the Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest is gearing up for judging essays! As a sponsoring club, our Rotarians and invited and encouraged to sign up now. Many of us have judged in the past and can vouch for this amazing opportunity - it gives you a window into the experiences that are shaping and inspiring our young people.

What's involved in judging?

  • Essay Judges in teams of two are assigned 30 to 48 essays from one or more high schools.
  • It should take about three hours of your time to read and score assigned essays over a one-week period.
  • All scoring should be submitted 48 hours before your Team Meeting.
  • On the day of your Team Meeting, teams use GoTo to meet with a volunteer team lead to select school-level winners and Honorable Mentions.

How do you sign up?

  • Fill out the Volunteer Sign-Up Form at your earliest convenience. There you will indicate your training option and find the link to the Essay Judge Team Meeting Sign Up Genius.
  • Once completed, you will receive a Google calendar invite for your training session. We everyone to attend the training. If you cannot attend, a recording of the training session will be made available following the session.

If you have questions about participating, contact George Stewart, who has been involved with Georgia Laws of Life since its beginning.
