USO Date Correction: December 28 (NOT 21)

Our next service date with the USO at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is Wednesday, December 28, 2016.

This date is a little different for us. It is later in the year and in the middle of the holiday travel season. We hope and expect that this means we have the opportunity to serve many military personnel and their families as they travel through Atlanta.

We need morning shift and evening shift help. We could also use some help soliciting food donations.

2016 Holiday Luncheon

The Rotary Club of Dunwoody invites you and your guest to attend our 33^rd Annual Holiday Luncheon, Friday, December 16, 2016. Cocktails will begin at 11:15 in the morning followed by Lunch at noon. The event will be held at The Dunwoody Country Club, 1600 Dunwoody Club Drive, Dunwoody, Georgia. You should have received an emailed invitation. If you didn't please notify Rick Woods.

A prompt RSVP is requested, confirming or declining the invitation. Final preparations depend on your RSVP.

This Week's Speaker: Larry Conley

George Larry Conley, born in Ashland, Kentucky, is a retired American professional basketball player. A 6'3" guard, Conley played college basketball at the University of Kentucky under coach Adolph Rupp. During the 1965-66 season, Conley was a starter on a Kentucky team that also featured future Basketball Hall-of-Famers Pat Riley and Louie Dampier. The Wildcats lost the championship game of that season's NCAA Tournament 72- 65 to Texas Western, and this game was the center of the 2006 film Glory Road. Conley played in the first Kentucky Colonels game of the American Basketball Association before committing to the army. He remained in sports most of his career until his recent retirement. He was a sports broadcaster for 42 years, around 1800 basketball games and 400 baseball games, and worked for CBS, NBC, ABC, ESPN, FOX SPORTS, and various regional sports outlets. He was a radio analyst for Olympic Basketball between 1996 and 2004. He was employed by Converse Rubber Co. General Electric Credit Corp and has served as a board member of Citizens Bank (Ky) for the last 25 years. Larry has been a Dunwoody resident for 38 years. He is married to Lorie. He has two sons Chris and Ryan and is grandfather to Ben and Katie. His most favorite hobby is wagering thoroughbred racing. He loves good food and wine and is very happy the advertising of the presidential election is over.

​2017 Governors Ball

On Friday (December 2, 2016) Floyd Williams officially kicked off the Club's run up to the 2017 Governors Ball. For those of you that missed the meeting here are a few of the essential details.

When: Saturday March 4, 2017 from 6 PM to 11:15 PM

Where: Westin Hotel

Theme: Moonshine and Magnolias

Dress: Black tie optional

What can you do?

1. Get stores/organizations to donate high quality Gifts that can be auctioned off to raise money for the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Fund,

2. Invite your friends that are:

a. willing to donate money to the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Fund

b. but who also like to party

3. Plan on attending with your spouse (You have already purchased 2 tickets with your Club dues)

4. If you own a small to medium sized business, consider purchasing a sponsorship

a. Can invite 4 of your best customers with their spouses, treat them to a great party, and make a substantial contribution to the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Foundation, all of which should be a tax deductable business expense related to entertaining your key customers. 5. We are asking each Club member to volunteer at least 4 hours of their time as we prepare for the Ball. Toward that end, on Sunday (12/04/2016) at ~8:15 PM, you were each sent an email with a link that will take you to the Club Runner website where you can sign up for one of the following Tasks:

Please sign up as soon as possible, so that the various Chairs can reach out and get you involved in our preparations. We need to mobilize the entire Club this year, as we are expanding the capacity of the Governors Ball from 250 to 400 attendees.

What does that mean? We need to invite more guests.

Also, as promised at the meeting, you were sent an email outlining the steps to print the 2017 Governors Ball Gift Donation form. Those instructions are:

Please start talking up the Ball with your friends, and start enticing them to attend. Watch for more articles in the coming issues of the Bulletin.

Toys for Tots at Holiday Luncheon

At our Holiday Luncheon on December 16th we will once again be collecting Toys for Tots. As you begin your Christmas shopping remember to purchase an extra toy or two. RCD has become a major contributor to this effort over the years.

Dresden Elementary Thank You Card Pick Up

Everyone is welcome to join Roy Ethridge and Jack Sparks, who will be going to Dresden Elementary School on December 14th at 10:00 A.M. to pick up thank you cards from the students who have received the books from RCD. Please keep in mind key components to include with your submission:

• Title of your article
• Description of the activity
• Dates, Time, Location, deadline, etc... (especially for upcoming events)
• Key Points of Contact Information and/or a link to reference website for details
• Names and/or headcount of Rotarians (and others) participating,
• The reaction of those benefiting and the numbers of those benefiting.
